Join us for our "Swan Song" event, a fundraiser for
the Greater
Los
Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD), on Saturday,
June 16
and Sunday, June 17. A full 20% of all in-store
purchases on Saturday, June 16 will be donated to
GLAD. It's feel-
good retail therapy, including a Kids Toy Rummage
Sale (all toys donated by our own Cameron & Chloe)
and plenty of FREE entertainment:
1:30: Silent Auction Opens. We have over 30 items donated for the silent auction by local businesses, from music lessons to handmade jewelry, and we're still collecting them. Let us know if you want to donate! 100% of the silent auction proceeds benefit GLAD. 2:00: Basic Signs 101- An intro workshop to Basic American Sign Language Vocabulary (by donation) 2:30: Velia Foster performs sign language to music. 3:00: Magic tricks with John Tonsick 3:30: Jody Stevenson and friends perform sign language to music. 4:00: Basic Signs 101- An intro workshop to Basic American Sign Language Vocabulary (by donation) 5:00: Mime Mark Wenzel will appear. 6:00: Live Music?? 6:30: Silent Auction Closes GLAD has been improving the lives of the deaf and
hard of hearing since its creation as a volunteer
organization in 1969. The GLAD facility located in
Eagle Rock is home to numerous and crucial
programs of GLAD including human services, health
education, low-income senior housing,
communication assistance, employment
development, public relations and more. Funds
raised will help assist with the substantial mortgage
of the facility and assist with the building's current
extensive repairs and maintenance.
GLAD occupies the former Women's Christian
Temperance Union (WCTU) Retirement Home, a
historical
landmark. The building was built in 1927 and was
used by the WCTU and its members until declining
membership forced it to close. The WCTU building
went up for sale in 1989, with many offers to tear down
the building and develop the site resulting. In 1991
The Eagle Rock Association stepped in and
successfully petitioned to have the site designated an
historic landmark, thus preserving the building and
grounds. GLAD took over the property in 1993 and
converted it into a deaf-friendly working and residential
environment.
We are honored to offer this, our final event, in support
of a neighbor that offers so many invaluable services
to our hearing-challenged friends and neighbors.

For those of you who will miss browing our books and
our famous back-room couch, we urge you to get your
Reading Fix at Read Books, just a couple of blocks
north of us. You'll find a wide variety of used books,
from classics to kids favorites, and
has a full newsstand, featuring the New York Times.
Read Books is located in the same building as the
new Lady Boutique, offering new and vintage clothing,
which has received its own rave reviews.
Both are blessed with great parking, conveniently
located at the rear of the building!
