We recently had a new customer comment on our Fair Trade products. It's true that we seek out ways to support the artists that create the beautiful things we sell, be they artists in our local community or in our global community. All of our musical instruments by Jamtown carry a Fair Trade seal, as do our palm wax candles by Aloha Bay. Our organic herb-filled chocolate, Chocamaca, is made with Fair Trade chocolate.

So what does the term "Fair Trade" really mean? According to FINE (a coalition of four key fair trade organizations):

Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers.

Fair trade organizations generally support these key principles:
  1. Create opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
  2. Support sustainable development
  3. Payment of a fair price in the local context
  4. Women's work is properly valued and rewarded.
  5. Give producers access to new markets
  6. Ensure that producers are paid promptly
  7. Create access to pre-production financing
  8. Safe and healthy working environment for producers.
  9. Participation by children conforms to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
  10. Protect the environment
Information source: Wikipedia .com.

As our stores become flooded with more and more goods made in less-advantaged places, we feel it is important to support the same rights and opportunities for our global producers that we would expect for ourselves. We hope you'll agree.
